Odakyu SC Development Co. We interviewed the company about the SPACER lockers installed in Hon Atsugi Mill Road, from the background of the introduction of the lockers to how they are envisioned to be used in the future. We also asked them about how they have been using both the "product pickup service" and "temporary luggage storage.

Please tell us about the background of your decision to introduce lockers.

At the time the introduction of the system was considered, sales at the actual stores were becoming difficult due to the effects of the new coronavirus.
Therefore, we began to consider the possibility of expanding sales channels for tenants who have stores in Hon Atsugi Mill Road.

With regard to customer service during the spread of infection, [shortened hours] and [non-contact] have been the focus of attention, and the Museum was forced to close at 7:00 p.m. However, since Hon Atsugi is in the suburbs, most people return to Hon Atsugi around 20:00 or 21:00 after finishing work in Tokyo. Therefore, we decided to introduce lockers as a system that would generate revenue by allowing customers to pick up their items outside the building.

Did you consider several companies when introducing the system, and if so, why did you choose SPACER among them?

We had hit on several companies, and I think we ended up with 4.5 candidates.

The deciding factor was the ability to use both [product pickup service] and [temporary package storage] in a single door, which was our goal. Another deciding factor was their knowledge of integration with our e-commerce site (Shopify) and their generous backup.

You operate several commercial facilities in the station, but is there any reason why you chose Hon Atsugi Mill Road as the location for the installation?

At first, we decided to introduce the system on a trial basis, narrowing it down to a few facilities.

The decision to locate at Hon Atsugi Milod was related to its location.
Lockers are often placed in areas where there is a high flow of people. However, since commercial facilities and stations have different jurisdictional areas, in most cases, lockers cannot be easily placed in concourses immediately outside of ticket gates.
In this respect, Hon Atsugi was chosen as the installation site because of its management area directly connected to the concourse.

Seibu Railway is currently (as of March 2023) conducting a demonstration experiment of the BOPIS service, but I would like to ask if you have any ideas for future uses other than temporary baggage storage.

We are very interested in Seibu Railway's services.
Hon Atsugi Milord has a food district in the basement and is characterized by its strength in food, which accounts for a large portion of its sales.
We believe that if prepared foods, boxed lunches, snacks, etc. can be picked up after business hours, they will be available to working people who come home late.

The Hon Atsugi area is also supported by local residents for its street stores.
In the future, we would like to offer a service that allows customers to purchase products not only from Hon Atsugi Mill Road tenants, but also from local stores on the Mill Road e-commerce site and pick them up at lockers close to the station.

We believe that if we can receive products from street stores located in areas that are difficult to reach without a car at the station, it will benefit not only the users but also the street stores by increasing their name recognition, which will benefit both parties. I hope that this will unite the community and help to boost Hon Atsugi.
